Meet Sam Champion: Landscape Designer
Through his experience and expertise in Agronomy, Horticulture, and Landscape Architecture, Sam Champion orchestrates creative solutions for our clients.
Sam joined our team in the fall of 2023. Along with his can-do attitude and warm personality, he brought along 30 years of landscape design, construction, and management expertise to The Greathouse Company’s design team.
Using a pragmatic approach to design solutions, his work often responds to natural site constraints and existing architecture. In particular, he’s informed by the extended family unit and larger neighborhood context.
In the past, Sam has also worked with several different municipalities and is well-versed in local ordinances and code requirements.
Get to Know Sam: Q&A Style
Education and organizations you’re in?
I’m a proud graduate of Auburn University (go Tigers!). As far as organizations go, in the past, I was a member of The Nashville Historic Zoning Commission and The Nashville Downtown Code Design
Review Committee.
Involvement outside of work?
You can most likely find me at my children’s soccer or hockey game…or in the quail woods chasing bird dogs! I reside in Nashville with my lovely wife of 16 years and our two young sons.
First interest in this industry?
My appreciation of landscape goes back to my childhood spent in rural Alabama, stretching from the Appalachian foothills to the Gulf of Mexico. These experiences and adventures, among many different vernaculars, forever shaped my bias and approach to landscape architecture.
Person in the industry you’d love to meet?
Ed Blake. Once a visiting professor when I was a student, I was unable to take his studio, but was able to interact with him some. He was one of the most thorough designers I’ve known and I’ve always admired that. I’d love to sit down with him over a glass of bourbon…and discuss the merits of the bourbon…
Biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?
Communication. Communicating properly is paramount. The more accurate your documents, the more succinct your voice.
Advice you have for those starting in the industry?
Learn the tectonics of design & construction processes and documentation. Plans are the voice that will describe your vision.
